US bridge collapses sending vehicles into water

WASHINGTON - A handful of vehicles and some people plunged into a river after a more than half a century old bridge that links Seattle in the US with Canada collapsed, throwing the movement on the highway into disarray.

Authorities said there were no deaths in the bridge collapse on the Skagit River in the US state of Washington. Three people were rescued and taken to hospitals, they said.

The extent of the injuries was unclear, according to Marcus Deyerin of the Washington Incident Management Team.

Authorities say they have no reason to believe any others are still in the river.

"I'm thankful there were no fatalities," said Washngton Governor Jay Inslee in a statement.

"Witnesses say a truck hit the bridge and caused it to collapse, but an investigation has been launched to confirm that."

The Interstate 5 highway, the main roadlink that runs along the West Coast, partially collapsed Thursday evening.

The four-lane bridge is near Mount Vernon, on the main route between the state's main city Seattle and the Canadian city of Vancouver.

Dan Sligh, one of those rescued from the water, said the bridge had disappeared in a "big puff of dust".
